Zone 2 has become shorthand for controlled, easier aerobic work. The concept can be useful, especially in structured training, but the internet often turns a flexible intensity range into an identity, a device setting and a reason to distrust ordinary movement.
Public-health guidance is broader: adults should aim for regular moderate activity across the week and include muscle-strengthening work. You do not need a lactate test to benefit from cycling, swimming or walking at a pace that raises your breathing while still allowing conversation.
Use a heart-rate zone if it helps you pace yourself. Ignore it when hills, heat, medication, stress or imperfect sensors make the number noisy. Consistency and enjoyment matter more than keeping every minute inside a coloured band.
Fitness can be structured without becoming severe.
